Dr. Young sent this to one of our members who has communal pneumonia. Many of you may know that Dr. Young himself suffers from a great many diseases and must always be vigilant in keeping himself healthy. Here are his suggestions:
Some items that may protect you in the future are "Airborne" (my wife swears by it, she teaches snotty-nose 3-6 year olds in a Montessori pre-school program); high dose vitamin-C (1500-2000 mg per day or more, you know when you have had too much when your have loose bowel movements, then back off by 500 mg per day); Zinc lozenges (helps kill viral infections in their early stages before they get a foot-hold; Zi-Cam (swab up your nose, but same idea as Zinc lozenges); sunshine for at least 15-30 min per day without sunscreen (boosts your body's ability to make vitamin-D); frequent washing of hands (after you shake hands, handle door knobs, touch phones, desk tops, etc. outside your home - wash hands at least 45 seconds with soap and warm water (washes off the viruses and bacteria) before you touch any mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth). Also, you might keep on hand the anti-bacterial hand cleaner and Kleenex - when you cannot get near soap and water. Just the cleaner alone will kill 99% of the bacteria , but just moves the other 1% viable bacteria around your hands. You want to wipe off the cleaner from your hands with Kleenex to get rid of that extra 1%. Fresh pineapple is good for mucus - stops it dead in its racks. Also good is sugar-free cranberry juice (the straight stuff - not mixed with th sweeter fruit juices, its an acquired taste) - contains agents that are anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral. Cherries are good as anti-bacterial / anti-viral agents. Also, fruits with dark skins - such as blueberries, and concord grapes - the tannins in the skin are anti-bacterial and anti-viral. If you take antibiotics (which are very non-specific and kill all bacteria in your system, both good and bad), you need to replenish your supply of "good bacteria" - can use yogurt (slow acting takes about two weeks), Dan-Active (within two days), acidophilus milk, or probiotics. Lastly, you want to drink plenty of fluids (basically "pee" the disease out of your system). To protect your kidneys take alpha-lipoic acid and L-carnitine. They are scavengers that remove harmful agents from your system.
The reason I am giving you this information and how I know it, is that I have to dampen my immune system, rather than stimulate it, because of the systemic lupus. The above keeps me "disease" free. If I get a viral infection, I just turn my overactive immune system loose to deal with it - usually takes about two days. But then there are the side effects from massive inflammatory action, so I prefer the former to the latter.
With respect to prednisone (cheapest of all the drugs) - it has two effects glucocorticoid and mineralcorticoid. The glucocorticoid helps fight the infection, but the mineralcoticoid is the portion that gives you the weight gain (water retention). Next time ask your physician for a prescription of either betamethasone or dexamethasone. Neither has the mineralcoticoid effects of prednisone. Also, the laxix can cause kidney damage - to counter its effects you need to take alpha-lipoic acid and L-carnitine (both can be purchased from GNC). (note from Barbara - and Puritan's Pride. Easy shopping. Click on the Puritan's icon on the Home Page) A method around taking laxix is to eat plenty of sea salt containing products, i.e., salty corn chips, etc. for about a week and then stop salt intake cold turkey - you will pee like it is going out of style - think every five minutes, but you won't hurt your kidneys in the process. Most drugs on the market have good effects, but they also have bad side effects as well, that is glossed over by the physician - either they don't know it our think the risk is worth the taking.
For fevers, the best remedy I know is lemon juice in hot water (as tart and hot as you can stand it) and put in honey to make it palatable. Also, if you can drink alcohol - add a shot of whiskey to the mix). Drink it down and bundle up in bed with plenty of covers and sweat it out of your system. You will be drenched by morning, but the fever will be gone.
Last thing to remember. The body heals when you are asleep. so get as much sleep as you can (between bathroom trips). When you are feeling better, restart your exercise program - SLOWLY.
The best thing you can do for me is get and stay healthy.
