Question asked of Dr. Ghen by a forum member. Thanks Dr. Ghen!

I had uc stem cell treatment for COPD. Ever since then when I wake up my eyes are pretty bloodshot. I do sleep with oxygen and am now taking more supplements than I used to, but I look like I have been out all night! Would the cells have caused this? I use Visine and it takes the red out, but why is it happening?

Blood shot eyes is typically not a side effect of stem cell transplant. You should consider other possible causes poor night sleep, the oxygen itself irritating the eyes, possible eye problems, or even hypertension. If there are other areas of your body that also have dilated blood vessels such as in the abdomen, I would have more concern. Check with the doctor that did the stem cell transplant and certainly with your opthalmologist. Often, I have seen patients that have undergone stem cell transplants, in which their vision improves.

Health, happiness and hugs,

Dr. G

Dr Ghen is right

I went for my annual eye exam and my astigmatism disappeared and the opthamologist was amazed at how healthy the optic nerves and blood vessels in my eyes were for my age.
